The WaterGuru SENSE shows FC consistently very high for my Salt Cell pool. Test pads and the Pool Store show my FC much lower. Why is this?
This situation can occur with Salt Cell pools especially in the winter months:
- Exposure to sunlight depletes FC levels very effectively
- In the winter, the sun is not directly overhead and instead is low in the Southern sky
- If the hours of sun exposure to the pool are reduced, FC will not be as quickly depleted
- The higher the number of bathers in a pool, the quicker FC depletes
- If fewer bathers use the pool in the winter, the FC will also not be as quickly depleted
Why do my test strips and the tests at the pool store show very low chlorine when the SENSE shows very high chlorine?
- Test strips and pool tests from Leslie's, Pinch-a-Penny and others "bleach out" when the water sample is heavily chlorinated i.e. FC 10ppm or higher and will not display accurate values for FC
- WaterGuru's FC test pads do NOT bleach out and will display accurate higher FC values for pools with very high FC levels
- WaterGuru's FC test pads will display up to a maximum of FC 25.4ppm. The FC is capped at the upper limit of 25.4ppm.
- If the WaterGuru SENSE consistently displays an FC level of 25.4ppm, the actual level could be much higher
How do I resolve the High FC issue for my Salt Cell pool?
- In the winter, Salt Cell pool owners need to adjust down the level of their Salt Cell Generator so it produces less chlorine
- Usually turning down the Salt Chlorine Generator will resolve the issue within a day or two after running the water pump on high
- If the level of FC is extremely high, you should shut off the Salt Cell Generator until the FC level is in the normal range
- Note: If the FC does not lower, after you adjusted down the Salt Chlorine Generator, you may need to verify that the Salt Chlorine Generator is functioning correctly
- Note: The expected life of a high quality Salt Cell Chlorinator is between 3 and 7 years before needing replacement
